Research

Marie Sklodowska Curie Masterclass 2016

In an attempt to increase its share of Marie Sklodowska Curie Individual Postdoctoral Fellowships, ST previously decided to invite young research talents to a Marie Sklodowska Curie Masterclass in Aarhus for three days in May 2016. Potential Marie Curie fellows will then come to AU to meet with supervisor and research group.
A total of five potential fellows will visit Geoscience: four in Aarhus on 10-12 May and one in Roskilde on 24-26 May.
It is essential that supervisor and research group dedicate sufficient time for the masterclass.

Lecturers wanted for the Danish Science Week 2016
When the Danish Science Week kicks off in September (26-30), skilled speakers are required for the "Science pays a visit" scheme, where you visit primary schools, upper secondary schools and libraries, etc. This call applies to both researchers and students.

Staff

New laboratory technician
On 1 May, Rikke Brok Jensen started a one-year employment as a laboratory technician at Geoscience. She lately had a temporary position at Geomicrobiology.
Until further, her work will be a mix of CleanLab / hard rock and some of Trine's tasks. Trine will be on maternity leave for about one year starting at the end of June.
A further presentation of Rikke will follow in a future newsletter.

PhD

New PhD student
On 1 May, Jan Danisch started as a PhD student. His supervisor is Stephane Bodin.
A further presentation of Jan will follow in a future newsletter.

Finances

Department budget
Expenditure budgetted to be paid by the department basically includes general administration and studies administered by the Secretariat.
In case you have such expenses - usually concerning participation in field trips/excursions, please contact the secretariat to have  the account number. And, since the account numbers change frequently, it is important that you check the account number each time.
Thus we can be sure that costs are correctly posted in the accounts and better manage the budget.

Official cars

Some reminders concerning our official cars

Logbooks
DO NOT FORGET to fill out the logbook when you return one of the department cars.
The logbooks are regularly audited, and every kilometer must be accounted. So - it is a problem when entries are missing, and it often involves much work to subsequently find the missing information

Private driving
NOTE: Private use of our cars is illegal – including parking overnight on your private address - a restriction due to purchase of official cars being exempted from state tax.
If anything happens, Geoscience can be imposed with heavy fines.

IT

Video conferencing

After a break of several years, our video conference equipment is now working again and can be used in two rooms: meeting room 1671-234 and classroom 1673-118.
You can make internal AU calls as well as external calls.
In preparation before the meeting begins, it is advisable at least to read this quick guide:
http://medarbejdere.au.dk/administration/it/av-og-videokonference/videokonference/videokonferenceudstyr/
The quick guide is also available together with the video conference equipment, usually in 1671-234.

Repair of mobile phones
Be aware that ST IT Support has a very good agreement with Telenor as to repair of mobile phones under warranty.
So, if your phone has an error considered to be covered under warranty (if in doubt, you are welcome to ask IT support), contact a Telenor store.  If the problem cannot be solved here and now, the store will lend you a phone.

Practical things

Put your waste in the proper containers / trash bin (Photo):

  • The large black waste container:
    FOR PAPER AND CARDBOARD ONLY!
  • The white garbage bin:
FOR PLASTIC AND OTHER SMALL COMBUSTIBLE MATERIAL.

Obs: Before putting cardboard boxes in the container, please make them flat - leaving space for more!

Overhead projectors
We have a number of old-fashioned overhead projectors around the house.
If you want to use one of them, and it does not work, contact Jarl. Another light bulb may help!
