Autumn Holidays

Week 42 is the annual Autumn Holiday.

Please be aware, many employees at AU will be taking time off. You may experience longer response time from e.g. HR and IT.

Students in training

Come well in advance when hiring

There are many things to remember, when hiring new employees or inviting a guest to visit.

At the Geoscience web page is a description on how to hire.
There is also a check-list, which we urge everyone to use, when hiring.

Both web page and check list is in Danish. Translation is on the way.

Minutes from committees

Minutes from various committees must be filed in Workzone. We are currently awaiting guidelines from the faculty on how.

Until then, the Chairman of the Committee may send the minutes to employees by e-mail.

If you do not yet have access to Workzone, send an email to hrit@au.dk and provide your AU ID.
Read more about Workzone on the AU website.

Minutes will not be published on the website as previously, as they may contain information that is protected by the GDPR.

New security firm

With the transition to a new security firm, the alarm systems are turned on in buildings 1670-1675 at 18.15 instead of at 18.00.

Please note that false alarms may cost the department money and must be avoided: Make sure to close doors and windows before 18.00.

Teachers are asked to notify students, who may be working late, about keeping doors and windows closed.

Brexit

Once again, Brexit is drawing closer. The current situation in British politics increases the possibility of a hard Brexit.

In a no-deal scenario, the UK will leave the EU 31 October 2019 and UK citizens are no longer EU citizens. UK will become a third country like any other non-EU country and new legislation will be passed.

UK citizens and their families living and working in Denmark before BREXIT
In case of a hard Brexit, the Danish government has suggested that UK citizens and their families living and working in Denmark will keep their rights to live and work in Denmark. This includes their rights to social security and social benefits. This will last for an indefinite transition period until further legislation has been passed.

Recruiting UK citizens after BREXIT
In case of a hard BREXIT, UK citizens will be considered as third country citizens. We expect that they will need a work and residence permit like any other non-EU citizens. As it takes up to two months to obtain a work and residence permit, at this stage it is not clear how to recruit from the UK in the first months after BREXIT.

Guests from UK
Allthough it is expected, that visa will not be needed after a hard Brexit, this has not yet been confirmed.

Anyone aware of British citizens who will be visiting Denmark after October 31. should be aware, their guests may not be able to enter Denmark. If it is at all possible, the guests are urged to arrive in Denmark before October 31.

Further information
If Brexit is delayed or an agreement reached before October 31., the existing rules will apply.

It is a highly unusual situation and many questions will most likely arise. In a situation like this, there will be grey-zone cases that do not fit the general rules. IAS will try to answer all questions to the best of our ability, but be patient, as legislation has not necessarily been passed yet.

Contact
For further information on visa and work and residence, permits please contact: Jakob Feldtfos Christensen: Phone: 20 37 47 65. Email: jfc@au.dk.
For further information on social security and tax, please contact: Jens Kristian Birthin. Phone: 87 15 33 25 Email: jkb@au.dk.

The IAS Brexit web page will be updated continously

ALARM SYSTEM HIGH RISK WORK PROCESSES

Two extra alarm systems have been acquired for high-risk work processes (e.g. working with HF acid, sawing, etc.):

One alarm system is a part of the HF emergency response system. Three alarm units are installed in 3 locations in buildings 1672 and 1674, which makes it possible to call for help internally in the buildings.

The second alarm system is flexible for use in other high-risk work processes where you need a 'buddy'.

For further information, please see the department's website under emergencies.

The picture shows the fixed alarm units. They are in electrical outlets in the corridors and may not be removed.

Flexible ventilation

Two flexible ventilation arms have been installed in 1672-220 and are to be used when working with chemicals when the safety data sheet prescribes this. For example, when working with or storing immersion oils, ethanol, etc.

See the procedure here.

If you have any questions, please contact Charlotte.

News from the IT committee

Charlotte Rasmussen has been chosen as head of the IT-committee, which for now consists of Charlotte and Thomas Lund Hansen.

Thank you to Bo, for his longtime work in the committee.

IT-support

In case of IT problems, always write to the IT help desk and not directly to Dan.

If you want Dan to solve the issue, you can write it in the message, but the e-mail should be sent to aarhus.st.it@au.dk.

You are always welcome to visit the help desk during opening hours.

New members of staff

Szymon Belzyt is a PhD student at Institute of Geology, Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan, Poland.

He is interested in sedimentology, Quaternary geology and neotectonics trying to recognize different mechanisms of liquefaction-induced soft sediment deformation structures (SSDS) development, including Pleistocene glacial isostatic earthquakes, on the area of Southern Peribalticum (NE Germany, N Poland, Lithuania, Latvia).

Szymon is in Aarhus for 6 months, up to February, 2020, as Polish National Agency for Academic Exchange (NAWA) scholarship recipient (Iwanowska programme), conducting the research project ‘The micromorphology of liquefaction-induced soft-sediment deformation structures – a new approach in analysis of deformations triggered by seismic shock’ in cooperation with Jan Piotrowski.

Berna Yavuz Pehlivanli started as a guest researcher, working with Hamed Sanei.

Cong Peng is a PhD student at Jilin University.

She has been working on data processing and noise suppression for ATEM systems. Currently, she is visiting HGG as a joint PhD student for a period of one year. She hopes to do some research on new processing technologies.

Junyi Ge started as a guest researcher, working with Andrew Murray.
