New support portal

Thursday 26 November a new online service protal went live. A portal where students and staff can receive quick and efficient help with solving IT problems and getting support for AU’s financial, studies administration and HR IT systems.

From this date, both support cases and questions for these systems must be registered on the support portal:

support.au.dk

Inquiries to NT-IT must also go through the portal.

At the same time, this means that you can no longer write to the e-mail addresses you have previously used for support.

Instructions for using the portal can be found at au.dk/itsm.

End of year

In connection with the closing of annual accounts, there are some important deadlines that must be met.

Finish credit card transactions in RejsUd: 18 December
Approve invoices in IndFak: 18 December

If there are questions about posting income and expenses as well as re-posting, you must contact your project controller.

Christoffer Karoff

Associate Professor Christoffer Karoff is the leader of a new project on student satellites.

Christoffer Karoff has previously participated in the satellite program Delphini-1, which aimed to train students in conducting satellite missions. The Danish Industry Foundation has now allocated DKK 4.25 million for a new project to ensure the launch of the first three cubesat satellites.

Denys James Grombacher

Assistant Professor Denys James Grombacher receives a grant from the Danish Independent Research Foundation.

Every year, the Danish Independent Research Foundation (DFF) awards a number of grants to some of the country's most promising research leader talents in the program Sapere Aude: DFF Research Leader. This year, assistant professor Denys James Grombacher receives DKK 6.1 million for the project "Finding drinking water in data-poor regions".

Separate news letter about work environment and IT

From now on, all news regarding work environment and IT will reach the employees at the Department of Geoscience in a separate newsletter.

Charlotte will be responsible of this newsletter, which will be sent out as needed.

If you have information that falls into these categories, which is important to get out to all colleagues, please contact Charlotte.

new contacts at TTO

AU's Technology Transfer Office (TTO) has, after a long period of great work pressure, been provided with resources that have made it possible to restore the department distribution model.
In this connection, Geoscience has been assigned to these 2 permanent contact persons:

Henriette Withen Hansen | hwh@au.dk | tel. 4189 3290
Torkil Bukkehave Hansen | tbh@au.dk | tel. 9352 1166

New employees

Ye Zhou started as Guest PhD student 1 November and will be here until 31 October 2021.

Project title:
Sr-Nd isotope composition in eolian dust from the Taklamakan Desert: Implications for the provenance and the transport mechanism of Asian dust

Project description:
Aeolian deposits are significant components of the Earth’s landscapes, aeolian dust plays a vital role in the Earth system through participating in the energy and material budget of the planet. Dust deposits in glaciers, soils, and ocean or lake sediments constitute an important archive of past environmental changes. The arid and semi-arid regions of northern China are the second largest dust source in the world. Determining sediment provenance is indispensable for providing better understanding on the responses of different surface processes to tectonic movement and climatic changes.

This guest Ph.D project aims to investigate the provenance of sediments (desert sediments and marine sediments). The research work involves the isotopic characteristics of dust in the Taklamakan Desert and Arctic Ocean sediments, and explore the transport way of dust between oceans and deserts.

Ekaterina Kulakova started as Guest PhD student 1 November and will be here until 14 May 2021.

Katia is a PhD student at Schmidt Institute of Physics of the Earth of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Moscow, Russia). She has background in geology, but her narrower specialty is paleomagnetism and rock-magnetism.

Katia came to Aarhus for a 6 month long internship at the Laboratory of Cosmogenic Nuclide Dating of Aarhus University. We are conducting a joint multidisciplinary study between Denmark and Russia of the loess-paleosol sections of Tajikistan (Central Asia). The main goals of her internship is to establish the geochronology of the sections and, possibly, obtain some paleoclimatic information using cosmogenic nuclides.
These goals are especially important in connection with the discovery of Paleolithic tools in these loess-paleosol sections, which may be associated with the appearance of the first Homo in Central Asia. In addition, the first laboratory in Russia for the chemical preparation of samples for cosmogenic dating is in development, so the experience Katia gains here is very valuable.

Goumeng Li started as Guest PhD student 1 November and will be here until 15 December 2021.

His supervisor during the visit is Thomas Ulrich.
