Information about work environment

Mini APV about COVID-19 and working from home

Mini WPA regarding COVID19 and homework has now been completed, there has been a little over 50% participation.

Thanks to everyone who took the time to provide input.

At the next meeting in LAMU, the results will be discussed, and we expect to make an action plan for the areas where concrete changes are possible. A report with the results will be prepared and sent to everyone.

Use of VPN when working from home

The Mini WPA showed a need to repeat how to use VPN.

VPN (Virtual Private Network) is used to create a closed connection between a computer from outside and AU's network. The connection allows your computer to behave as if it were physically at AU.

Use of VPN from a PC outside AU's network:

  1. First download the Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client on the computer you want to use VPN from
  2. Select our faculty in the dropdown menu (still called ST)
  3. In the field "username" enter your AU ID followed by "@uni.au.dk"
  4. Enter your password (same as used to log on to AU's systems)
  5. Download the "Microsoft Authenticator" app (pictured) to your phone and approve the login request. Two-step confirmation is then performed
  6. A web browser opens automatically from which you must select the "Download" function
  7. Follow the Cisco AnyConnnect Secure Mobility Client Installation Guide

Once the client is installed, you can use the VPN from the computer.

Safety course for new students

All new students who are to work in the laboratories must go through a lab briefing.
The briefing consists of a personal introduction by Charlotte and a safety course on Blackboard.

Read more information on the staff portal's page about lab briefing

Remember that students are not covered by the university's self-insurance. We encourage students to take out private accident and travel insurance, where they themselves ensure that it covers accidents involving laboratory or field work.

ENTREPRENEURS will HAVE EASIER ACCESS TO FUNDING

Entrepreneurs at The Kitchen, the entrepreneurs hub for researchers and students at Aarhus University, will now have easier access to early-stage entrepreneurial funding. This is because Aarhus University has entered into a strategic partnership agreement with Denmark's largest start-up accelerator: Accelerace. Accelerace helps startups via intensive training courses and loan investments.

Read the news about Accelerate moving into The Kitchen

AU Photographer

Remember, it is possible to have a portrait photo taken by AU's own photographer.

Efforts should be made to ensure that photos are of more recent date when they are used in e.g. PURE, catalogs and on websites with presentation of courses and events.

It is currently possible to book time for PURE photography on 6 October.

Registration for staff photography takes place here

Graduation party is cancelled

In the spring, we chose to postpone the graduation party for this year's graduates until 23 October.

Due to the rising corona numbers and the reduction of the assembly ceiling from 100 to 50 people, it has been decided to cancel the party altogether.

The secretariat will instead make sure that each graduate receives a gift, consisting of a special mug as well as a greeting from their supervisor.

Close the windows...

Remember to close windows and turn off the lights and projectors when leaving classrooms and meeting rooms.

Parking department cars

In the parking lot by building 1675, 4 parking spaces are reserved for department cars.

Make sure to park the department cars in these 4 spaces after use, and ask the same of the students who drive the cars when going on field trips.

Evacuation drill

Evacuation drills are held in the fall in buildings 1120 and 1670-1675.

Read more about purpose and concept of the evacuation drill here .

At Geoscience, we also have a set of green vests which are used by observers from the working environment committee (LAMU) who will stand around the corridors during the drill.

All staff and students have received an e-mail with instructions on how to behave in connection with the exercise.

New security company

As of September 1, our security company is Securitas. They can be contacted by telephone, 70 26 36 50 between 16.00 - 06.00.

NTbyg is working on putting new stickers with the correct telephone number on all windows with alarms.

On the staff portal's page about Emergencies, you can read in which cases the security company must be contacted.

Waste sorting

We sort waste at Geoscience.

Be sure to put the waste in the right containers.
For example, flamingo should NOT be left in the basement by the car lift (building 1674), it should be put in the large container in the parking lot.

If a container is full, notify Willy from NTbyg to have it emptied.

Willy, +45 2118 6202, willy.christensen@au.dk

Removal of abandoned samples

The shelves in the basement corridor in building 1672 are for ongoing tests.

Unfortunately, there is a tendency to forget your material and/ or forget to put your name/ date/ contact information on the samples.

Please be sure to notify students that they must remove their samples when they finish a project and before they leave us.

We need the shelf space for new projects so everything without a name will be removed in October.

In addition, the freezer capacity is limited, especially there is a lack of space in the chest freezer (by the cold room in building 1671) for larger objects.

New employees

For a long time, the newsletter has been about the corona virus, and new hires have gone a bit under the radar.
Going forward, we will again present our new employees here in the newsletter.

Christoffer Karoff was employed on 1 September 2020 as an associate professor specializing in environmental remote sensing.

Christoffer received his PhD in 2008 and has since worked to understand how the Sun affects us here on Earth. This has partly taken place through direct observations of the Sun, through studies of sun-like stars, through analysis of cosmogenic isotopes and through the running of climate models. Christoffer joined the Department of Geoscience in 2013 and has since worked on how to combine earth observations with big data techniques and machine learning tools to increase understanding of our planet. It is also this work that will form the foundation for his work in the future, where he i.a. leads a major national partnership for the use of remote sensing to accelerate the green transition.

Christoffer will also teach the courses: 'Earth's renewable energy sources', 'Geomodeling and machine learning', 'Applied physics', 'Stars and planets' and the new course 'Geoscience of sustainability'.

iClimate and the Department of Physics and Astronomy contribute to cover the costs associated with this position until 31.12.2024.

Muhammad Rizwan Asif has been employed as a postdoc, starting 1 September 2020.

Muhammad received his B.S. degree in electrical (telecommunication) engineering from COMSATS University Islamabad (CUI) in 2013, and the M.S. and Ph.D. in information and communication engineering from Xi’an Jiaotong University in 2016 and 2019 respectively. After that, he has been working as a postdoc with the Department of Engineering at Aarhus University in close collaboration with the HydroGeophysics Group (HGG) at the Department of Geoscience, Aarhus University. As of September 1 this year, Muhammad Rizwan Asif formally joined the Department of Geoscience to support research projects at HGG employing electrical and electromagnetic methods. His current research interests include machine learning applications for geophysical data. He is also interested in image processing and computer vision for intelligent automated systems.

"Working at HGG is exciting due to the cutting-edge research being conducted in the group and its impact on geophysical applications in groundwater across the world with immense benefits to the developed and developing countries. It is a true pleasure to be a part of something that is extremely beneficial for the society".

Mathias finished his Masters degree in Geophysics this summer here in Aarhus concerning remote sensing observations from space.

He will be working on the project HYDROism: Fast hydrological simulation for efficient groundwater management.

The project aims to develop a fast method for computing the effects of changes in groundwater systems. This could be from wells, pollution, heavy precipitation etc.. This fast method should be developed by a combination of geostatistics, hydrological simulations and machine learning. The ultimate goal of the project is to develop an applicable, very fast, and highly accurate computation method for administrative groundwater work concerning well placement, pollution and future climate challenges.

Besides his interest in Geophysics and computer science he spends a lot of time watching the English premier league, especially Liverpool, and formula 1 on Sundays.

Frederik Ersted Christensen has been employed as a research assistant, starting on 10 August 2020.

Frederik is 28 years old and finished his master's degree in geophysics here at the Department of Geoscience this summer. In his thesis, he worked with the new FloaTEM system in order to be able to use it on fjords and other places close to the coast, where the water depth is low.

Now he is employed as a research assistant at HGG, where he is currently doing a lot of fieldwork, mostly tTEM, but also DCIP and WalkTEM. He also contributes to the preparation of an article on the FloaTEM system.
