Research and publications

Anders Damsgaard

Postdoc Anders Damsgaard tells in this article on DR about quicksand. What exactly is it, how does it occour - and what should you do if you are stuck?

Read the article: "Det bugner med kviksand i Danmark: Sådan kommer du op af de skjulte fælder" (in Danish)

New head of phd programme

Søren Bom Nielsen will take over the role as Head of the PhD programme at the Department of Geoscience per 1 November, 2021.

New IT-supporter

We have a new IT Supporter. His name is Daniel Gjerulf Knudsen and he will be in the partner office, 1672-123, every Tuesday from 9 to 14 starting on 2 November.

Welcome Daniel.

Outside office hours, you must use the IT support portal support.au.dk when you need help with IT.

Join PIGA

... and get a discount for the Christmas lunch.

All employees at the Department of Geoscience are welcome to participate in this year's Christmas lunch. This also applies to guests who are at the department on 3 December. The price for participation is 200 DKK.

If you are a member of PIGA (Staff Association at Geoscience), you get a discount of 100 DKK.
A membership costs 20 DKK per month.
If you are not yet a member, you can become one by contacting Susanne in the secretariat or chairman of PIGA, Rasmus Andreasen.

NOTE! Only staff members employed by the Department of Geoscience can become members of PIGA. This is because the monthly subscription is deducted from the salary.

How to book rooms at geo

Several employees at GEO have encountered challenges when trying to book a classroom or meeting room in Outlook.

Especially the calendars of the 2 new teaching rooms in building 1653 have caused problems. Many had their bookings rejected, even though the premises were vacant.
IT has solved the issue, which was caused by an error in the setup of the Outlook calendar.

When you book either a teaching or meeting room, you must invite the room to the meeting you create in your own calendar. If the room is already booked, you will be notified of this.

Changes in RejsUd

As several have already noticed, changes have been made in RejsUd.

Where previously there was a choice between 3 types of purpose, today there are only these 2 to choose from:

  1. Purchases / trips made in Denmark
  2. Purchases / trips made abroad

At the same time, the number of cost types has been cut from 72 to 30, which should help to make the settlements simpler and faster to handle.

There is still help to be found here: au.dk/firevigtige (for now, in Danish only)
and here: rejser@au.dk

Remember WorkZone

Remember to save documents in WorkZone!

You must save:

  • Research applications (incl. Grant letter / rejection)
  • Collaboration agreements
  • Cases concerning government services
  • Inquiries from private individuals
  • Committee minutes

On AU's website about WorkZone, you can become a user of the system, find user instructions and sign up for courses in using the system.
You can also find this Overview of documents to save (in Danish)

And you can get help by contacting Krishna or Susanne in the secretariat.

Study Service Office closed

The Nat / Tech student service office in Vandrehallen has been closed down.

The students have been informed.

As a student, you can still get help with questions about exams, dispensation, merit, etc. This is done by email: studieservice.nat-tech@au.dk or via the chat, which is open every weekday during the semester from 10 to 12.30. The chat is accesible via the study portal.

Sustainability at GEO

Greener delivery from Lyreco

AU Procurement has entered into a new agreement for the supply of office supplies with our existing supplier Lyreco.

Previously, Lyreco delivered to AU from day-to-day. The increased focus on sustainability has led to one weekly delivery day for each address at AU.

At the Department of Geoscience, we will only receive goods from Lyreco on Thursdays.

Items for delivery on Thursday must be ordered no later than Wednesday before 11.00.

If you need items from Lyreco, please contact Susanne in the secretariat.

New weight for shipments

A new weight has been purchased for weighing packages for shipment.

The scale is located next to the door in the mail room 1672-129.

It can weigh up to 350 kg.

After use, switch off the weight by holding down the on / off button for 5 seconds. The display turns off when the button is released.

Moving boxes on loan

The department has a lot of moving boxes in stock that can be borrowed by staff and students when moving.

They are handed out by contacting the secretariat.

New employees

Simon Andrieu

Simon is a guest researcher at Geoscience and will be with us for 10 months, working with Stéphane Bodin.

Here is a presentation of Simon in his own words:

I am a sedimentologist at the French Geological Survey (BRGM : Bureau de Recherches Géologiques et Minières). My research themes are the sedimentology and diagenesis of carbonate rocks and platforms. At the BRGM, I had the opportunity to work on applied projects, for example to help prospecting for underground water ressources or to guide architects in the choice of stones for the reconstruction of Notre Dame de Paris cathedrale. I am now an invited researcher at the Aarhus University for ten month. I work with Stéphane Bodin and François-Nicolas Krencker on the lateral evolution of the Middle Jurassic sedimentary discontinuities of the High Atlas (Morocco). These key surfaces, corresponding to sedimentary gaps sometimes lasting millions of years, can record a complex diagenetic history that could help us to better understand the intricate mysteries of their formation.

Esben Lundsgaard Palmstrøm

Esben will be with us at Geoscience for 3 months working as a Research Assistant in Seislab.

Here is a presentation of Esben in his own words:

Greetings
I recently finished my M.Sc. in Geology here at Aarhus University, where my main interests have been in geomorphology, glaciology, and numerical modelling.
I have been hired on a 3-month position as a research assistant, where we are trying to apply a discrete element method to simulate structural developments in relation to basin inversion. The geological subject of the project is a bit outside my field of experience, but I find it very interesting to apply numerical methods in a broad range of geological subject, and this is no exception.
I enjoyed my time here as a student and feel lucky to have the opportunity to stay for a bit longer.

Corona/covid-19

The first 3 people who approach Susanne in 1672-130 and shout "OVERRASKELSE" get a surprise.
