No. 3/2023 - March 2023

Let's get started

March was the month when the geologists continued to appear in the program Vores Vejr (Our Weather) on DR1. It was also a month with an eerily cozy trip to an Escape Room and as many as two PIGA events with board games.

Now we're just about to say hello to April, and it starts quietly with the Easter holiday. But before we feast on Easter eggs, we will go through a newsletter.

Calendar

  • 21 April
Professor Inauguration for Mads F. Knudsen
  • 12 May
    Alumni Day
  • 23 May
    PIGA Planetarium Performance
  • 26 May

HENRIEKA AND CHRISTOF AS TV STARS ON DR

Did you see Vores Vejr on DR 1 on 24 March? If so, maybe you recognized Henrieka and Christof?

Based on their recently published article "Seasonal sea-ice in the Arctic's last ice area during the Early Holocene", they were interviewed about the melting sea ice.

If you missed it, you can watch the program here. (Mostly in Danish)

You can see them at 0:45-1:02 and 05:25 – 08:05.

ANOTHER STAR ON DR1

As you may have noticed, a compressed air pump has been installed on the building at the back entrance. Here, everyone who chooses the green transport solution is welcome to pump up the bike.As you may have noticed, a compressed air pump has been installed on the building at the back entrance. Here,

The geologists are slowly but surely taking over Vores Vejr on DR, it seems. You could also see Søren Munch Kristiansen in the program on 22 March. Here he shed light on why farmers keep finding large stones in their fields.

You can watch the program here. (2:57-4:42) (Only in Danish)

REGISTER YOUR ABSENCE

You have to register all absences in mitHR yourself, such as:

• Individual sick days (should be reported on the first day you are sick, and an end date must be set when you are back)
• Children’s first and second sick days
• Changes to holiday and special holidays
• Childcare days
• Senior days

Remember that it is important that the dates are listed correctly in the system.

Sick days etc. must still be reported to your immediate manager. This means that you must both register your absence in MitHR AND contact your immediate manager via email.

MitHR can also be used on your mobile phone. This requires two-factor authentication.

UPDATE ZOOM

As of Tuesday, 28 March, all users MUST have updated Zoom to the latest version (5.14), otherwise you will not be able to use Zoom. The update takes 3-5 minutes.

You can read how to do it here.

SKI hotel agreement

Renewal of the SKI hotel agreement has once again been postponed.

It is now expected to start mid-May 2023.

Until then, you can choose any hotel you want in Denmark.

Air travel

AU will continue the agreement on air travel. Eight airlines have been awarded the agreement, and the agreement started on 1 March 2023.

The agreement covers domestic and international flights on 325 routes with fixed discount rates.

Each route has been allocated to up to three suppliers.

Flights can be purchased through the travel agency CWT. CWT will buy the flight from the supplier with the cheapest ticket at the desired date, time and cabin class.

A new feature of the agreement is that AU can obtain information about its annual CO2 consumption from all airlines and receive information about the airline's annual CSR reporting.

Read more about the agreement here.

Liquid nitrogen for tanks

AU has completed the call for tenders for tank installations and liquid nitrogen deliveries. The new supplier is Linde Gas, and the new contract enters into force on 1 August 2023 for the next ten years.

NEW COLLEAGUES

JUDITH ELGER

I am a marine geophysicist and join the SeisLab as visiting researcher from GEOMAR (Helmholtz Institute for Ocean Research Kiel) in Germany.

For my research, I use seismic data in combination with cores to develop geological models as it is my goal to understand processes in the seafloor sediments.

My field of expertise reaches from fluid migration, slope stability to mapping the distribution of gas hydrates and offshore groundwater resources.

I am looking forward to getting to know the Department of Geoscience at Aarhus University and to chatting with you about your research.

RAFAELA ALVES

Hello! My name is Rafaela Alves. I'm from Brazil and I am a PhD student in the Atmospheric Science Department at the University of São Paulo, Brazil.

I have a degree in Environmental Engineering and a Master's in Environmental Technology from  Polytechnic Institute of Bragança, Portugal.

I come to Aarhus University for an internship as a  guest PhD in Geoscience Department to work with emissions and dispersion greenhouse gas modeling with different atmospheric numerical models.

I am grateful for this opportunity to work at this excellent University with excellent professionals.

CHRISTOPH BÖTTNER

My name is Christoph and I am a marine geoscientist with a background in qualitative and quantitative marine geophysics & geology and quantitative geomorphology and a diverse set of skills that enables me to explore a wide range of Earth science processes. I have completed my doctorate (Ph.D.) at GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel focused on anthropogenic and natural fluid migration pathways in marine sediments with emphasize on monitoring of carbon dioxide capture and storage in marine geologic formations. The backbone of my research is my advanced experience in collection, processing and interpretation of marine hydro-acoustic and reflection seismic data (2D/3D) together with the utilization of geological and geochemical data (i.e. well log, core log data). After two years leading the ICDP Office Germany in Kiel, I have now started my Marie-Skłodowska-Curie Fellowship at Aarhus University under the supervision of Marit-Solveig Seidenkrantz and Katrine Juul Andresen.

My EC-funded project GreenFlux will assess the contribution of (sub-) Arctic marine gas hydrate and permafrost systems to marine geologic greenhouse gas emissions. By merging seismic and acoustic data in combination with paleo-oceanographic proxies from sediment cores, GreenFlux will explore the fragility of these marine systems and associated fluid flow systems to climate change across the NE Greenland shelf. Moreover, using a comparative method, it will evaluate the impact of environmental differences on gas release and predict the future of the Arctic in warmer temperatures.

DO YOU HAVE GOOD NEWS?

Have you published an exciting article? Have you participated in a podcast? Have you received a grant or something else that could be interesting news either on the website or in the newsletter?

Then write to Kathrine Eg and she will fix it.
