Geoscience newsletter

No. 6/2023 - June 2023

Let's get started

The summer holidays have just begun, and it is very quiet in the buildings. Now we are catching our breath after the exams, and most people have gone on holiday. But not everyone has time off yet, so we're just sneaking in one last newsletter before the secretariat closes and switches off completely for the summer.

Enjoy the holiday and the (hopefully) good weather.

Calendar

  • 11 August
    NAT Summer Hang-out
  • 1 September
    PIGA Welcome back Friday bar
  • 25-27 October
    Study internship

Graduation

On Friday 30 June, we said goodbye to this year's graduates at a cozy reception.

Alumnus Rasmus Ø. Stenshøj talked about his own journey to a job at GEUS, and student Jesper i Dali gave a short speech about his class mates followed by a photo collage.

We look forward to following the graduates in the future and hope that we have not seen the last of them.

PIGA Summer Party

The prestigious PIGA trophy was again awarded at this year's summer party on 9 June.

Thank you for a pleasant day with garden games and delicious food and drink. It's always nice to get together about something with your colleagues.

Digital storage solution for open research data

All AU researchers now have access to ERDA, which is a new digital system for storing and sharing non-sensitive research data.

new working environment representative

Ole Rønø Clausen replaces Thomas Ulrich as working environment representative for VIP/office from 1 September 2023 to (provisionally) 29 February 2024.

NEW VICE DEANS

It won't be long before we get David back to Geoscience. This means that he is leaving his position as vice-dean for research, and it sets in motion a strategic expansion of the dean's office to strengthen business and career efforts.

"We would like to further emphasize our collaboration with the business sector and assist our students and young researchers in progressing successfully and securely in their careers. Therefore, we prioritize expanding the dean's office with two talented individuals who can truly contribute to realizing both the faculty's and the employees' potential," says Dean Kristian Pedersen.

As a result, the dean's office will consist of Dean Kristian Pedersen, Vice-Dean for education Kristine Kilså, a Vice-Dean for research, business, and innovation, and a Vice-Dean for career development.

Green OA

Do you wish to know if one of your Accepted Manuscripts (AM) can be uploaded into Pure and be made freely accessible, but are unsure about the rules at your publisher?

Then you can upload your AM into the Open Access Submission Form.

AU Library will then check the rules that apply to your article and, if possible, upload the article in Pure.

You can read more about Open Access here.

If you have any questions, you are welcome to contact Morten H. Gad.

CO2 CAN BE CONVERTED TO LIMESTONE

Geoscience is involved in a collaboration to investigate the possibility of converting a large amount of CO2 into limestone via natural processes.

New colleagues

PER KENT PEDERSEN

I am a visiting professor with the department for the summer till early September, from the University of Calgary, where I am an Associate Professor. My research focuses on reservoir characterization for fluid flow from pore to basin scale. Research is multidisciplinary, integrating sedimentology, petrography, organic and inorganic geochemistry, cores, outcrops, and well logs to characterize depositional environments and diagenesis that influences the ability to fluid flow, including rock mechanics.

Since graduating from Aarhus University in 1999 with a degree in Marine Geology, I have had a diverse career in Canada as a postdoc, assistant professor, government senior research geologist, and exploration geologist in industry.

Since joining the University of Calgary in 2008, I have established a multidisciplinary research group of graduate students and postdocs, collaborating with a large and diverse group of researchers from universities, government institutions and the industry.

My research program current research focuses on:
- Depositional processes and stratigraphic architecture of mudstones, and controls on lateral variability in their organic content.
- Geological reservoir characterization of a broad spectrum of low permeability reservoirs.
- Relationship between sedimentary facies, composition and fabric, and fracture characteristics (i.e. fracture intensity, height, in outcrops and subsurface, and induced seismicity.

Recently, my research has expanded to geothermal, hydrogen storage, and carbon sequestration projects.

I look forward to rejuvenating relationships with researchers at Aarhus University.

closed for the summer

The secretariat here at Geoscience is closed during the weeks 29 and 30.

The Administration Center Nat-Tech is closed due to holiday in the weeks 28 to 30 (from Monday the 10th to the Friday the 28th of July).

Building service is staffed all summer - with holiday staffing.

IT support is open, but to a lesser extent. See the plan here.

DO YOU HAVE GOOD NEWS?

Have you published an exciting article? Have you participated in a podcast? Have you received a grant or something else that could be interesting news either on the website or in the newsletter?

Then write to Kathrine Eg and she will fix it.
