No. 1/2024 - January

Let's get started ...

2024 has begun and the exams have rolled over the department to the sound of nervous whispers in the corridors. It's finally coming to an end, but there's no time to catch your breath, because now the semester begins.

Fortunately, the days are slowly getting brighter, and the biting cold has released its icy grip on us. In short, there is good reason to jump into the new semester with renewed energy.

And why not do it with a cup of coffee from the new machine and a newsletter?

CLAY AT Prime time

The landslide in Ølst is on everyone's lips, and one in particular here at the department gets to talk about it: Søren Munch Kristiansen.

The media have really discovered Søren, and he has been traveling around the country talking to journalists about plastic clay.

See for example here when Søren was in Go' aften Danmark. (Only in Danish)

incomprehensible

Bo has been around a lot talking about the Earth, since the publication of his Reflections Earth. Most recently, he was a guest on P1's podcast Ubegribeligt, where he again talked about the book.

You can listen to the episode here. (Only in Danish)

travel reimbursements ARE YOUR RESPONSIBILITY

Since 2021, it has not been possible to make manual travel reimbursements.

This means that business partners, assessors, lecturers at the Summer University, students and the like who have claims related to field trips, canteen operation etc., cannot get money reimbursed by handing in receipts to the secretariat.

The secretariat does not make travel reimbursements for employees, guests, business partners or the like. You have to do that yourself.

If you are in doubt about how to do it, you can find help here.

The travel department is happy to help and answer questions. You can contact them here.

THE LAPWORTH MEDAL

Shortly before Christmas, The Palaeontological Association announced that our Professor Emerita Else Marie Friis has received The Lapworth Medal.

The medal is the most prestigious award given by The Palaeontological Association. It is given to a paleontologist who has made a very significant contribution to the science of paleontology through a significant amount of research and service to the scientific community.

The department congratulates Professor Else Marie on this well-deserved honour. We are proud of her achievements and the award of The Lapworth Medal reflects the high caliber of knowledge and expertise our department brings to the forefront of research.

THE MAN-MADE DUNES

For almost 90 years, geologists have discussed how 110 sand mounds on Harrild Hede south of Ikast have arisen. It has not been clear since the archaeologists didn't think they fit in with them either. Now the mystery has been solved in a research project led by Søren Munch Kristiansen.

It turns out that several of the country's largest dunes are man-made. The long dunes should be called sand drift dikes and were created in the 18th and 19th centuries to keep drifting sand away from the fields, meadows, and villages of the time. The dyke has slowly grown to, after many years, become significant dunes.

Grant for Submerged Paleolandscapes

Katrine Juul Andresen has been awarded a grant of nearly 5 million DKK from the Carlsberg Foundation for the project "Drowned paleolandscapes – a geological record for assessing landscape and environment response to postglacial sea level rise and climate change (RisingSea)."

pay NEGOTIATIONS

From 1 February to 25 February 2024, you can submit information for use in the pay negotiations.

NEW COLLEAGUES

Marianne Lyngholm Nielsen

For the next 6 months we have the pleasure to welcome back a former lab technician, Marianne, to the department. She is here to complete job training after a longer period of illness.

Marianne is therefore not available for laboratory projects but will be doing ad hoc work for Charlotte in the laboratories.

DO YOU HAVE A GOOD STORY?

Have you published an exciting article? Have you participated in a podcast? Have you received a grant or something else that could be interesting news either on the website or in the newsletter?

Then write to Kathrine Eg and she will fix it.
